| Botox | What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein which blocks the release of acetylcholine, thus inhibiting muscle contraction. As a person ages and skin elasticity decreases, repetivitive muscle movements can cause lines to appear on the face. These creases result in patients looking angry, anxious tired, or simply older than their age. By relaxing the muscles, Botox makes the skin appear smoother.

| Is it safe?
Botox has a long safety history. The FDA approved it for cosmetic use in 2002, and just completed an extensive safety review in which they found no serious complications from the very small cosmetic doses. Botox is the most widely used cosmetic procedure done by physicians, with nearly 10 million treatments performed.
How is it given?
Botox is injected with a tiny needle and causes little discomfort. A treatment takes about 10 minutes and results in no downtime. The most common sites for Botox are between the eyebrows, across the forehead and along the crows feet at the corners of the eyes.
How long does is last?
The treated muscles will noticeably relax within 2-4 days, with softening of facial lines. The full effect is visible by 14 days, and it last about 4 months.
What about Botox for migraines?
Botox has been used for migraine headaches for many years and sometimes insurance will pay for these treatments. As with cosmetic Botox, results last about 4 months. While not all migraine sufferers are helped by Botox, it has certainly been a great answer for some patients.
What about Botox for depression?
Recently, a study looked at people who had various facial cosmetic treatments. Although all of them were happy with their improved appearance, only the Botox group showed a lessening of depression, anxiety and irritability. It is postulated that the inability to frown feeds back to the brain and impacts our emotions. Whether this study will be confirmed remains to be seen, but the only side effect of such a treatment would be a younger looking face.
What about Botox for severe sweating?
Botox is FDA-approved for severe underarm sweating (primary axillary hyperhidrosis). It blocks the release of the chemical that stimulates sweat glands, thereby markedly decreasing underarm perspiration. Approximately 15 tiny injections are given into each underarm area. Significant reduction in sweating occurs within 4 weeks and lasts 6-7 months. It is recommended that you first see your doctor to rule out any medical diseases that might be causing the problem. Also, check to see if your insurance company might cover this treatment, especially if topical anti-perspirants have been ineffective. For those who have struggled for years with the embarrassment of excessive sweating, Botox can be a wonderful solution.
